As the second-largest search engine in the world and a video site with over 1 billion monthly visitors, YouTube has been in the spotlight. It is more personalized than any other TV station, covering multiple video categories and all age groups. Especially with the epidemic, more and more kids have been spending more time on YouTube in the past year.

I recently read an article about a new feature introduced by YouTube: parents can monitor their child’s viewing activity. I have to say, when I saw the title, I knew I was intrigued by it.

The article describes that YouTube will offer three different content settings for parents: “Explore,” “Explore More,” and “Most of YouTube.”
The content will be filtered based on a combination of user input, machine learning, and human review to ultimately determine which videos to include. Not only can parents access their child’s browsing and search history, but they can also use Google Family Link to download screen timers.

But is this new feature necessary?

Yes! I believe it’s necessary. In the age of social media, the rapid transmission of information does bring convenience, but there are also many potential hazards, especially for teenagers.

Take my real experience as an example. When I was in second grade, I was browsing cartoons on “Tudou.com.” (A popular video site in China at the time, similar to YouTube). At the end of the movie, a video popped up showing a female ghost with long hair crawling out of the TV. I was so scared that I didn’t even turn off my computer and ran out of the room screaming while crying. In the days to come, whenever I passed by the TV, I would unconsciously imagine someone crawling out of the TV. It wasn’t until years later that I realized it was an image from the horror movie “The Ring.

Finally, I’m glad that YouTube responds to the needs and desires of families with such great new features. I urge all social media sites to be more socially responsible because only such companies are the most competitive and viable ones. And the world will be a better place for it!
